Our Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) Self-Learning Online Course and seasonal small group sessions empower you to build resilience, manage intense emotions, and improve relationships. Whether you’re seeking personal growth or professional development, our flexible, evidence-based program is designed for you.

Launching June 2025, our evergreen online course and seasonal small groups (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) make DBT accessible anywhere, anytime.

What You’ll Learn

Our DBT program includes 10 sessions of DBT skilled facilitator-led video content, a comprehensive DBT handbook, concise lesson summaries and end-of-course quiz with certification. The course focuses on:

Mindfulness: Stay present and grounded in challenging moments.
Distress Tolerance: Cope with emotional crises effectively.
Emotion Regulation: Manage intense emotions for lasting balance.
Interpersonal Effectiveness: Build healthier relationships.

The program includes:

      • 10 videos (20-30 minutes each)
      • DBT Handbook with practical exercises
      • 10 lesson summaries for better learning experience
      • End-of-course quiz for certification

Enhance your learning with optional supportive group sessions (8 one-hour sessions per term, 4–6 participants per group) for personalized support from a skilled DBT facilitator.

This virtual course provides a space for you to learn the practical skills of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) that include how to better regulate your emotions, practice interpersonal skills, tolerate distress, increase awareness of thoughts and emotions, foster mindfulness, gain new connections, and develop a level of comfort in a social context.

Participants who receive the $50 discount by registering for both the online course and the small group are not eligible for the early bird discount of $30. Each participant may only apply one discount program per term.

Frequently Asked Questions

DBT is a form of CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy; it differs as it adds into techniques like applicational practice of mindfulness, expanding distress tolerance, building resilience, acceptance and interpersonal effectiveness skills so that healthier relationships with others and self can be cultivated. Unlike CBT, DBT takes judgment out of the process for individuals to discover themselves what the problems are and then help them look at how they can make the practical changes. 

DBT skills help individuals deal with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, PTSD, suicidal thoughts, grief, low self-esteem, relationship issues, and anger. DBT is also helpful to support individuals living with borderline personality disorders and bipolar disorders.
If you want wish to make a change in learning new skills and coping strategies in dealing with stress, improving mental health wellness, and relationship with self and others, this would be a suitable course for you.

This course is suitable for individuals 16 and up.

Yes, DBT was originally developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan at the University of Washington in the late 1980s. 

No. Application fee is non-refundable. If participants cancel before/after the first session, the course fee will be prorated and can be kept as “credit” for future courses. A “credit’ will be valid for 24 months, starting from the date of your cancellation.

No, you do not need referral to join the course and the support group. 

Course fees (covering non-physician facilitation, course development costs and copyright fees) may be eligible for private insurance coverage claims under Social Worker or Registered Psychotherapist, Qualifying – for Online Group Therapy. Your private insurer determines and approves the eligibility of the claim.

Grace Health Centre does not directly bill your insurance company. You will receive a receipt to send to your insurer. You are responsible for making these claims to your insurer.

Participant's Agreement

  1. I agree to uphold confidentiality – anything shared in the group is NOT to be shared outside the room. This includes no gossiping and not showing the computer screen to family members or friends. I promise to be in a private space when I am engaging in group therapy and not to record any of the sessions. I promise to inform the facilitators if I am attending any virtual session of this course from a location that is not the same as that used to register for the course, or is outside of Ontario.

Information disclosed by participants will be kept strictly confidential by the facilitators: Kathy Lam, Dr. Chen and interns, and will not be revealed to any person outside of the group without permission. 

Limits of Confidentiality

There are certain situations in which we are required by law to disclose information obtained. These situations are:

  1.   If you pose a threat of physical harm or death to yourself or to others, including danger of suicide or assault.
  2.   If the facilitator becomes aware of a situation of neglect or harm of a minor or an elderly individual.
  3.   If a court of law issues a legitimate subpoena, requiring the facilitator to disclose information.
  4. If an issue arises and the facilitator needs to consult with another counselor or supervisor. 

I understand and accept that the facilitators are bound by these professional ethics and laws and will take any necessary steps to ensure my safety and the safety of others. 

  1. I agree that in the event of an emergency that pertains to the welfare of my medical and psychological health, I will go to the nearest hospital emergency room or call 911. 
  2. I agree to respect every person’s contribution without judgement. We agree to encourage all participants to share their own feelings, and to not offer advice. 
  3. Personal information may be shared, however, so as not to trigger anyone in session, I agree to stay clear of details, and provide only the general feelings experienced.
  4. I agree to respect every person’s privacy and right to refrain from participating or volunteering information, while recognizing that active involvement is of great benefit to the participant.
  5. I agree to pay full attention and to listen carefully to others during the group meeting. This includes not interrupting, staying off my devices (i.e. not engaging in texting, social media, email, phone calls, gaming, browsing, etc.) and not carrying on side conversations during the session. I agree to mute all cell phones and other devices during the session. 
  6. I agree to arrive on time. I will attend each session to provide continuity and a safe environment for the group. If I cannot attend a session, I will let the facilitators know in advance. 
  7. I agree that I will not invite visitors or observers to our group. 
  8. I agree to engaging in virtual care and acknowledge the limits of using virtual programs for therapy for reasons such as suboptimal understanding/communication, interruptions due to technological and internet bandwidth.
  9. I agree to the use of email and reported understanding of the risks and appropriate use of email.
